BISA Workshop on IR and Environmental Security
13 June 2014
Sussex Centre for Conflict and Security Research, University of Sussex
The BISA Working Group on Environment invites paper proposals for a workshop on IR and Environmental Security. The aim of this workshop will be to reflect on the conflict and security implications of environmental challenges and environmental change, and specifically to bring International Relations perspectives to bear on discussion of these issues. In recent years, there has been renewed policy and scholarly discussion of environmental conflict and security, especially in relation to climate change. International Relations as a discipline, and International Relations theory, have not figured highly in discussion of these issues, however. Most of the recent research on the subject has been quantitative, with much of it conducted by geographers and economists; beyond examination of ‘securitisation’, there has been relatively little IR theory-informed research on environmental and climate security. This workshop will bring together new research on IR and environmental security, with the aim of improving understanding of the environmental security problematique, as well the potential contributions of IR to understanding environmental conflict and security, and the implications of the latter for broader IR debates.
We welcome a range of research papers, including:
• issue-based or geographically or historically focused case studies of environment-conflict linkages;
• analyses of either global or local environmental concerns, and of environmental issues ranging from pollution to resource competition and security;
• discourse or policy analyses;
• investigations of the political economy of environmental security;
• qualitative or quantitative analyses;
• innovative IR theory-informed readings of the environmental security problematique;
• methodological and conceptual reflections;
• analysis of the implications of environmental change, conflict and security for theoretical and substantive debates in IR.
Proposals are welcome from scholars at all stages of their career, and PhD researchers are particularly encouraged to attend. It is our intention to use the papers presented as the basis for a journal special issue. Papers should ideally be pre-distributed prior to the workshop.
Some limited financial support is available, and we will aim to make a contribution to each speaker’s travel/accommodation expenses. Funds will, however, be distributed according to need. There is no registration cost.
Deadline for abstracts: 28 March 2014
Please send abstracts of up to 250 words to Joanna Wood: scsr@sussex.ac.uk. Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Jan Selby: j.selby@sussex.ac.uk
